This is part 2 of the What Do You Need to Cut Cookie Stencils? Series!

In the first post of the series, I discussed some of the most important things you need when you decide to start cutting stencils. If you missed it, be sure to check it out here, so you can decide which machine and cutting mats you'd like before you get started.

In this post, we will be discussing traditional stencils materials and tools you can use when cutting your cookie stencils.  Traditional stencils are made from food-grade plastic type materials. There are also a few tools you can grab to help out with your stencil cutting. Although these tools are nice to have, they are not needed to begin!

Let's start with the traditional stencil materials you'll need.

Post #1 in our "Wondering What You Need to Cut Cookie Stencils?" Series

Aug 19, 2020

Using stencils for cookie decorating is a fun way to add creativity and a unique touch to your cookies! One of the questions I get asked over and over is, "What do I need to start cutting stencils?" So, I've compiled a list of things you will need to get going!

When we start something new, there is always a little anxiety. We worry that we don't know what we are doing. What if I break this thing? It wasn't cheap. What if I waste stencil material? You will waste a few sheets, but probably not as many as I did when began learning. Thank goodness that anxiety won't be around long, because when you begin to learn and cut your first few stencils, you will be asking yourself why you did not get your machine out of the box sooner!  I love to take the guess work out of designing and cutting cookie stencils to make things as easy as possible so that you can focus on the fun of it all!

I am going to be sharing a list of things in the next few blog posts that you need to cut stencils...

Using Glaze to Decorate Sugar Cookies

Aug 12, 2020

There are so many wonderful options and techniques when it comes to sugar cookie decorating! Today, my friend Cameo and I are giving you the dish on how to use glaze icing for your decorating!

I've always been a fan of royal icing for my cookies but I know that many cookiers prefer to use glaze. My friend and fellow KC Cookier, Cameo from CR Confections, is one of them. In the video below we sit down to talk all things glaze. We chat about the benefits of using glaze and Cameo shows us how she uses it to decorate her sugar cookies! She is now offering a monthly membership to teach how to use glaze to decorate adorable cookies, so if you are interested, be sure to check out her site HERE.

Using Glaze Icing to Decorate Sugar Cookies
When I first started decorating cookies a few years ago, I had such a hard time using glaze. I loved the way it looked on other people's cookies, but mine was always too translucent. I...

Royal Icing for Decorated Sugar Cookies

Jul 13, 2020

We all know what a beautifully decorated sugar cookie looks like. It's a work of art that seems almost too pretty to eat. The way to get from plain ole cookie to edible art is royal icing! I'm sharing some of my favorite tips and tricks about royal icing to help you create some of your own cookie art!

When it comes to being a cookier, having a delicious roll out cookie recipe is the foundation for your success. Second only to that is your royal icing. If the cookies are your foundation, the royal icing you use to decorate your sugar cookies is the backbone. Making and using this unique icing is simple once you get the hang of it, and that's what I want to help you do!

What is Royal Icing?

First things first: What makes this icing different from other icing? The biggest difference is that royal icing is great for decorating cookies. It dries into a smooth and glossy finish, which makes it easy to package and stack your...

No More Wasting Stencil Material!

Jun 19, 2020

Are you tired of wasting stencil material and want to know how to identify and fix the problem? I’m here to help! I wasted my fair share of stencil material when I began learning how to use my cutting machines and sometimes it still happens. For the most part, though, my cuts are now successful and I want to share what I’ve learned so you can lower your stress level and increase your triumphs!
Have you ever been cutting cookie stencils (or something for another project) and everything is going great but then, all of a sudden, nothing is cutting correctly? The cutting blade won’t cut through your stencil material or it has missed parts. You are ending up with those small bits of stencil material stuck in the stencil when you remove it from the mat. Or, when you begin weeding the vinyl for a silk screen stencil, the vinyl doesn’t come out easily and is tearing. If this sounds familiar take heart! I’ve been there too and before you give up I have a...

It's Ok To Focus On You Sometimes

Jun 02, 2020

Does everything seem overwhelming to you right now? Goodness! The past few weeks have been surreal. Sometimes this cookie thing can feel overwhelming all by itself, but now...with everything going on in the world, you may be even more stressed. It may be a slow time for your cookie business or maybe you are extremely busy. Maybe you do it as a hobby, but can't find the joy in it right now. You started decorating cookies because it is something that you love to do! Some of you are moms who have kids at home from school and you don't have a free minute because you are home schooling right now. Some of you may be at home, your kids are grown, and you don't have enough to do because you can't go anywhere or you don't choose to go anywhere right now. And that is lonely. Even during this crazy time, taking some time for yourself is really important. We need human interaction and we need to take care of ourselves mentally and physically.

Super Simple DIY Weeding Tool Hack

Mar 20, 2020

It’s time for another super simple (and super inexpensive) silkscreen cookie stencil assembly tip! If you are a member of The Colorful Cookie Club, you may have seen me talk about this (along with some other great tricks) during one of our Thursday Night LIVE tutorials. One of our members, Cherry Leigh, mentioned she had tried it and loved it, so we made one together during our LIVE. We call it the “Wacky Weeder”. This idea is just too great to keep to ourselves, so even if you are not a member of our club(yet) I wanted to share it with you! It is the best DIY weeding tool!

You may have seen or used a weeding tool with a needle in it to weed vinyl for your silk screen stencils. Well, this hack will save you some money and it is so easy to do that you can make multiples to keep in all the places you sit and find yourself weeding.

What you’ll need:

1 mechanical pencil

1 sewing needle(not to thin and not to thick so it will fit snug)

That’s it, that is all...
